This wasn't on my list right now. I always wanted to read it, but then I saw it included in my audible (the whole series actually), it will be removed from it by July 1st, tho. So I took it as a sign to just start it. (And at this point binge it)

I was truly hooked right from the start, what a set up. What a journey Tisaanah has to go on. It was really rough at times, actually brutal what she had to go through. Yet she stayed so fucking kind and soft. At times she felt a bit too young, but that could also be how the narrator voiced her. So this is more an audiobook issue than the book itself.

I truly loved the magic and the whole visual of it.

And I love the relationship between Max and Tisaanah. I loved how it slowly evolved, first the reluctant mentorship (I love this shit), then something like a friendship and him actually warming up to her, and then the blooming romance. YESSS!!!!

Also Max is just such a great male character, truly loved him, and loved it even more that at a certain point we get his POV as well. (The backstory, tho - heartbreaking. The magic - INCREDIBLE.)

I wish we had gotten a bit more from the side characters, but when they were around, the different dynamics between Max and them especially, it was great. This idiot tries so hard to be a recluse but people won't leave him alone.

Ein Hoch auf den Hörbuchsprecher, ohne ihn hätte ich es niemals durchgehalten.

Der erste Band hat mir wirklich gut gefallen und hat mich total gepackt. Aber mit dem zweiten Band hab ich mich wirklich schwer getan. Zwischen drin hab ich wirklich überlegt aufzugeben, aber die Story hat mich dann eben doch interessiert.

Es sind nur echt die Charaktere mit denen ich mich in dem Band unheimlich schwer getan habe. Sie klangen alle gleich für mich. Hast du einen Fluchen gehört, hast du sie alle gehört.

Vielleicht war es aber auch die düstere, echt brutale Stimmung in dem Buch, die im Moment einfach nicht für mich gepasst hat.

Ich habe es fertig gehört und werde auch den letzten Band noch lesen. Es war kein schlechtes Buch, und mir hat es auch Gefallen wie die Geschichte erzählt wurde und dass wir einen extra POV hatten. Außerdem ist mir Phoebe in dem Band wirklich total ans Herz gewachsen. Aber ja, am Ende hatte es ein paar kleine Highlights aber allgemein hab ich mich einfach nicht verbunden gefühlt.

Ooooh das ist so ein guter Auftakt in die Reihe, und macht echt super viel Lust auf die anderen beiden Bücher. Es war und wird wahrscheinlich auch in den anderen Bänden düsterer sein als ich es erwartet hatte. Deswegen Triggerwarnungen vorher checken.

Ich liebe Sophie Kims Schreibstil einfach total, und auch wie sie ihre Charaktere schreibt. Sie wachsen mir immer super schnell ans Herz. Lina ist einfach nur WOW. Gleich von ihren ersten Moment, während ihrer Entwicklung und dann am Ende. Mit Rui bin ich erst im Laufe des Buches warm geworden, einfach deswegen weil wir mehr von ihm erfahren haben und auch mehr Zeit mit ihm verbringen konnten. Ich bin echt so gespannt mehr über ihn rauszufinden, vor allem warum er tut was er tut und warum er es anscheinend eher machen muss, anstatt eine Wahl zu haben.

Die Entwicklung der Beziehung der beiden fand ich auch wirklich richtig schön.

I'm really bitter about the ending, cause WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!?!?!?
I have so many more questions left. SO MANY.
But I also feel like it left the door open for more books in this world. Maybe, probably, HOPEFULLY?!?!?

But this is still a full 5 star book.

I just love the two books so much. I love the story, I love the world. I love the magic.
And most importantly I LOVE THESE CHARACTERS WITH ALL MY HEART.
That's why the ending hurt me he way it did. Cause I need to know how everything wraps up for these characters. Yes, we got glimpses and maybes, and I also have my imagination but still.

I love the conflict between Malik and his sisters. I just wanted to be part of the reunion.
I need a whole book just about Afua and the fall out of the decision she had to make.
I also need more Ife. I love them!!!

I still haven't really wrapped my head around all the things that happened at the end of the book. But the journey there was incredible. Even if it hurt me a lot.

update: the more I think about the potential of the book and the excetution of it, I'm getting more and more pissed, so 2.5 stars. I'm petty.

The thing about this book is that I really enjoyed my time while I was reading it, and I was really sucked into the world. But now that I have finished it and sat a bit with my thoughts, I'm just okay about it.

I love the idea of a Mulan retelling, where she's doing it for selfish reasons, just to get away from her father, and the fate of being the wife of someone who is just as bad as he is. I ALSO really love the idea of this not having the Disney ending, where everything is all and well and people will get over the "but she's just a girl" real fast.

I think it's the love triangle at the end of the day that really was so damn unnecessary. And also just not believable. The relationship between Meilin and Sky just didn't do anything for me, not romantically, it worked much better in a platonic way. Meilin and Lei on the other hand. That's what I call chemistry. This better be endgame. (Also I need to see more of Autumn)

I really liked the magic in this.
And I really wanna see how the story continues in the next book, now that we are probably gonna move away from the Mulan story of it all. At least I think we are.
