Innovative Hybrid Network Design for Future Terahertz X-Haul Links

THz communications are highlighted as a key enabling technology for next-generation wireless communication systems in 6G, offering ultra-high data transmission capabilities enabled by its extensive available bandwidth.

In light of the anticipated transformation of existing network architectures and design approaches, particularly the increased network density driven by the deployment of numerous small cells, planning the entire X-Haul network poses a significant challenge.

One promising application of THz communications is to support transport network infrastructure, encompassing fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul, in a cost-effective and time-efficient manner instead of the traditional fiber-based solutions.

Therefore, this thesis investigates the overall potential of integrating THz X-Haul links into 6G, covering various aspects such as wave propagation characterization and modeling, the development of automatic planning algorithms, and the analysis of simulation results.

In line with this, the influence of weather conditions on THz propagation channels is investigated, and two approaches for modeling weather conditions are proposed for realistic simulations. In addition, the data traffic modeling approach is outlined, projecting the expected volume of data traffic in 6G. Moreover, a total of four automatic planning algorithms are introduced to efficiently design the X-Haul links. The performance evaluation of these algorithms is conducted using the in-house developed holistic tool SiMoNe (Simulator for Mobile Network).

Simulation-based investigations demonstrate the feasibility, scalability, and reliability of providing a high-performance transport network, thereby ensuring a seamless mobile access experience for users.
