Avery, Isabella, Odina, Lee and Josie used to be inseparable, spending every summer together at surf camp. Until the summer Josie disappeared without a trace. Ten years later, Avery returns to town with her band for a summer festival. When a mysterious announcement appears in the local newspaper that seems connected to Josie's disappearance, she reaches out to her old friends to figure out what is going on. On top of everything she also has to navigate her complicated history with Jake, her bandmate and the man she has never quite managed to get over.
As a teenager I was obsessed with Pretty Little Liars, and this book feels very much like an adult version of that. It is a great mix of romance, friendship and mystery that kept me hooked throughout. I especially enjoyed the time jumps, which let us gradually piece together what happened in the past while following what is unfolding in the present. Avery is a compelling protagonist and learning more about her background made me root for her even more. Her relationship with Jake is far from healthy though. There is a lot of miscommunication, mostly because the two of them simply never talk to each other properly, and Jake pushes her boundaries a little too often. That said, I found it surprisingly relatable that she never really gets over him despite everything. What I enjoyed most however was the friendship and mystery side of the story. Watching Avery and Odina reconnect while trying to decode the new clues was one of the highlights for me. The book ends with plenty of open questions around Josie's case, which makes it very hard not to pick up the next part straight away.
A fun and engaging read that combines friendship, romance and just enough mystery to keep you guessing.
